Cross-eyed Rottweiler

A man took his Rottweiler to the vet and said to the vet: “My dog’s cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for it?”

“Well” said the vet “lets have a look at him”

So he picks the dog up and has a good look at it’s eyes.

“Well” says the vet “I’m going to have to put him down”

“Just because he’s cross-eyed?” says the man.

History of German Shorthaired Pointer breed

It is likely believed that the German Shorthaired Pointer dog came from the German Bird Dog family. The first mixed breeds produced a hound like dog by combining Spanish Pointer and the Hanover Hound. Result from this mixture had the ability to trail and point at the same time. Breeders during those time wanted to create a Pointer that can also be an all purpose hunter. But not everyone agreed on the way to do it. Majority of the crosses were with the English Pointer, but it did not impart a breed with a very stylish physical characteristics. English Pointers also contributed to the development of this breed. The German shorthaired pointers showed up in the US sometime 1920’s and was recognized by The American Kennel Club only in 1930’s. The dog’s reputation as being the ultimate hunting dog grew in popularity.

History of American Eskimo Dog breed

The American Eskimo Dog is strongly connected to the White German Spitz. The latter was brought to the United States and name was changed to American Eskimo Dog. They were initially bred to guard people and properties, therefore, they are territorial by nature. They are also brave watchdogs that human can definitely count on. However, they aren’t considered as an aggressive breed but because they are valiant watchdogs, American Eskimo dogs are generally vocal. They will certainly bark at strangers who come close to their owners or owners’ properties. In Northern Europe, the small Spitz were ultimately developed into different German Spitz breeds. Immigrants from Europe brought their pets to America. Although white was not always the color of the breed, it was actually the preferred one in the US. To show patriotism during World War I, owners began referring to them as American Spitz instead of German Spitz. After the war, the breed became popular in circus and were always featured. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1995. It was also recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club but not elsewhere in the world. It is not exclusively an international dog. The German Spitz and American Eskimo are always incorporated with each other. Some parts of the America still call this breed as the German Spitz. But both breeds were separately developed since the American Eskimo was relocated in the northern part of America. Thus the breed was broaden.

History of English Springer Spaniel breed

The term Spaniel came from the Roman name for Spain, which is HISPANIA. The factual basis of the breed is still uncertain. If the English Springer Spaniels did not spread into Europe from Spain, people of Ireland, Wales and France will not believe that it should be called as “dog of Spain”. It may have been spread by Roman traders and conquerors, but there is no proof or a written evidence of its Roman name. However, it was concluded that the spaniel was a native of Spain and was broaden by the Romans in Europe.

In the late 14th century, a wealthy and powerful Lord of Southern France wrote his immortal classic where he describes hunting dogs in their work as quartering in front of the master, retrieving from water and land, glowing games – all of which are characteristics about English Springer Spaniel we know and admire today. By the 19th century, the English Springer Spaniel was first exhibited in the Show Ring. Because of the World War I, the show scene did not start again until the late 1920’s. This was then the most active period of the breed and registrations of the breed to the American Kennel Club were established.

History of Saint Bernard breed

Saint Bernard, originally bred for rescue, is a descendant of the Tibetan mastiffs taken by the Romans to the Alps about 1000AD. More than 2,000 people have been saved by the Saint Bernards. They worked in teams to look for lost or injured travelers. The dogs lick them to get their circulation going and one dog lies beside the man to give them warmth. Another dog gets a human rescue and led them back to the lost traveler. This breed’s sense of smell can be used even if the person is under feet of snow. The family of St. Bernard shared history with Sennenhunds or Swiss Mountain Dogs. These are huge farm dogs and the dairymen of the Swiss Alps. Saint Bernard dog is known internationally today as one of the Molossoid breeds. Its name derived from traveler’s hospice on the often untrustworthy St. Bernard Pass in the Western Alps between Italy and Switzerland where the name was passed to the dogs in the area. St. Bernard wasn’t commonly used until mid 19th century.

History of Pekingese breed

Pekingese dog breed was held with high regard by Chinese Imperial but when overtaken by the French and British forces in 1800’s, it was ordered to be destroyed to avoid being in the hands of foreign people. However, there were five dogs that were able to stay alive and were brought to England. These five dogs were bred and continued the breed that we have today. Recent DNA analysis proved that Pekingese is one of the oldest breeds and one of the least genetically diverged from wolves. For centuries, only members of the Chinese Imperial Palace can own this dog. But since there were few dogs that survived and were taken to different countries, breeding was continued.

This breed doesn’t choose its handler. It can be a great companion for adults or children. Pekingese can be picky eaters but diet of this dog should always be watched on. They shouldn’t be putting on too much weight or they will have joint problems. Due to their abundance of fur, it is important to keep the Pekingese care intact. They are indoor dogs and they are prone to having heatstroke when exposed to high temperature.

History of Japanese Chin breed

The Japanese Chin was originally bred to aid women in the Imperial Palace and as lap dogs for Chinese aristocracy. This breed stayed in the guidance of the upper class and they were usually given as gifts to diplomats and foreigners who endowed noted services to Japan. Commodore Perry brought the first Chins to England in 1853 and a pair was given to Queen Victoria. Eventually, the breed came to America but there is no record of their destination.

The true origin of the Japanese Chins is, up to date, a controversy. It was agreed that the source is from China and were brought over to Japan around 732. Some say the ancestors of these dogs showed in Japan around that year as gifts from the rulers of Korea while others claim they were gifts to the Empress of Japan. This breed reflects Japanese receptivity and is truly Japanese in creation. The Japanese made a breed distinct from other dogs for helping and working reasons; while the Chins are bred for pleasurable companionship.

History of Golden Retriever breed

Golden Retriever was developed in Britain in the 1800’s like many sporting dog breeds. It was originally bred in Guisachan Estate in Scottland, owned by Lord Tweedmouth. His goal was to breed a hunting dog that would be more active and stronger than the existing Retrievers.

History of German Shepherd breed

Shepherd dogs from places like Bavaria, Thurginia and Wurtemberg are in the background of German Shepherd Dog. The first German Shepherd Dog was registered in April 1899. During the 1800’s in Europe, there were several attempts to standardize the breed. The dogs were bred to conserve characters that aid in their herding job and protecting flocks from predators. This was practiced among local communities in Germany where shepherds choose and breed dogs that they believe had traits for herding. There were battles for on differences in the belief of breeding dogs. Some agreed that dogs should be bred for working purposes others say that appearance should also be considered. The fight these differences, the Phylax Society was formed in 1891 to create a standardized dog breeds in Germany. However, they were unsuccessful in their goal, thus, they had inspired people to follow standardizing dog breeds independently.

Von Stephanitz, an ex-cavalry captain believed that dogs should be bred for working reasons. He was attending a dog show in 1899 when he was shown a dog named Hektor Linksrhein. Hektor is a product of selective breeding and achieved what Von Stephanitz believed what a working dog should be. History of Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed

There are two types of Welsh Corgis, namely Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi. These two were interbred in 1930’s. They may have been brought to Wales by the Vikings in the 800’s or the Celts in 1200 BC. Corgi means dog in Celtic. It is also possible that the Flemish weavers took them in the 1100’s.

The breed was developed in Pembrokeshire, Wales and was used to drive the cattle by barking. They could avoid cattle’s kicks because the dogs are so low to the ground. Welsh Corgis were herding sheep, geese, ducks, horses and cattle and is considered as one of the oldest breed of the herding dogs. They have proven themselves as great companions and exceptional competitors in sheepdog trials and dog agility.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis may be offspring of Swedish Vallhund Dogs, Schipperke Pomeranian and other Spitz-type dogs. They are continuously becoming more popular in the US and ranked as 22nd in the American Kennel Club registrations in the year 2006.

It is said that this is Queen Elizabeth’s favorite breed and owned 17.

History of Chesapeake Bay Retriever breed

The history of Chesapeake Bay Retriever can be traced to two Newfoundland dogs, the male “Sailor” and the female “Canton”. These two were rescued from a floundering ship in Maryland in 1807. George Law wrote this account in 1845 which appears on the website of the American Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club. Law rescued the pups.

In the fall of 1807 I was on board of the ship Canton, belonging to my uncle, the late Hugh Thompson, of Baltimore, when we fell in, at sea, near the termination of a very heavy equinoctial gale, with an English brig in a sinking condition, and took off the crew. The brig was loaded with codfish, and was bound to Pole, in England, from Newfoundland. I boarded her, in command of a boat from the Canton, which was sent to take off the English crew, the brig's own boats having been all swept away, and her crew in a state of intoxication. I found onboard of her two Newfoundland pups, male and female, which I saved, and subsequently, on our landing the English crew at Norfolk, our own destination being Baltimore, I purchased these two pups of the English captain for a guinea apiece. Being bound again to sea, I gave the dog pup, which was called Sailor, to Mr. John Mercer, of West River; and the slut pup, which was called Canton, to Doctor James Stewart, of Sparrow's Point. The history which the English captain gave me of these pups was, that the owner of his brig was extensively engaged in the Newfoundland trade, and had directed his correspondent to select and send him a pair of pups of the most approved Newfoundland breed, but of different families, and that the pair I purchased of him were selected under this order. The dog was of a dingy red colour; and the slut black. They were not large; their hair was short, but very thick-coated; they had dew claws. Both attained great reputation as water-dogs. They were most sagacious in every thing, particularly so in all duties connected with duck-shooting. Governor Lloyd exchanged a Merino ram for the dog, at the time of the Merino fever, when such rams were selling for many hundred dollars, and took him over to his estate on the eastern shore of Maryland, where his progeny were well known for many years after; and may still be known there, and on the western shore, as the Sailor breed. The slut remained at Sparrows Point till her death, and her progeny were and are still well known, through Patapsco Neck, on the Gunpowder, and up the bay, amongst the duck-shooters, as unsurpassed for their purposes. I have heard both Doctor Stewart and Mr. Mercer relate most extraordinary instances of the sagacity and performance of both dog and slut, and would refer you to their friends for such particulars as I am unable, at this distance of time, to recollect with sufficient accuracy to repeat.

Mercer is said to have described Sailor:

... he was of fine size and figure-lofty in his carriage, and built for strength and activity; remarkably muscular and broad across the hips and breast; head large, but not out of proportion; muzzle rather longer than is common with that race of dogs; his colour a dingy red, with some white on the face and breast; his coat short and smooth, but uncommonly thick, and more like a coarse fur than hair; tail full, with long hair, and always carried very high. His eyes were very peculiar: they were so light as to have almost an unnatural appearance, something resembling what is termed a wail eye, in a horse; and it is remarkable, that in a visit which I made to the Eastern Shore, nearly twenty years after he was sent there, in a sloop which had been sent expressly for him, to West River, by Governor Lloyd, I saw many of his descendants who were marked with this peculiarity.

The dogs from both shores of Chesapeake Bay were identified as the Chesapeake Bay Duckling Dog in 1877 even if there is no proof of the dogs Sailor and Canton breeding. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were declared as the official dog of Maryland in 1964 and the mascot of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

History of Great Dane breed

This breed have a long history and Greek coins from 36BC carry the image of a dog similar to a Great Dane. It was called the “Apollo of all Dogs”. Comparable dogs were used by the Asian people called Alans who invaded Germany, Italy and Spain in 407 AD. These wonderful animals were carefully bred to overcome bears and wild boars. Over time, they were crossed with Irish Greyhounds and the result was a slender, tall, swift dogs known today as the Great Danes. Contrary to belief, this dog didn’t come from Denmark.
According to Barbara Stein, the breed came from Germany and probably from a cross between the English Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound. However, other basis kept that the breed originated in Denmark. This has remained controversial and unsettled. The dog was referred as Danish dog in England and Grosser Dänischer Jagdhund in Germany.

History of Australian Shepherd breed

The Australian Shepherd worked as herding dogs on ranches in the US where it was developed. Its primary ancestors were most likely Spanish dogs that escorted the Basque shepherd and herds of fine Merino sheep exported to both Australia and America in the early settlements. It is also said that it probably crossed with Collie stock. Aussie Dog's history is indistinguishable and the cause for its misleading name. Breeds as we know them today didn’t exist before the Victorian times but local distinctions of the predecessors of the current breeds came into America with their owners and livestock. These may include some British herding dogs, dogs from Germany and Spain including Carea Leones. In the old days, shepherds prefer dogs’ abilities rather than their appearances. Eventually, shepherds interbred dogs that they believe will be more helpful and be better workers for any given climate and landscape.

With the 1849 California Gold Rush, an immense migration occurred to the west coast and Easterners. It was just effective to bring sheep by ship and came Australian flocks along with other regions’ shepherds and their own herding breeds. Dogs from Australia had already started and bred for climates and terrains similar to California. However, it is not clear where the name “Autralian” came from, though it is likely possible that dogs from Australia were blue merle and the adjective “Australian” turned out to be connected
with any dogs of that color.

History of Miniature Pinscher breed

The word Pinscher came from the German word which means, Terrier. Doberman Pinscher and Miniature Pinscher aren’t related to each other. The latter originated in Germany and is older than the Doberman where existence can be tracked back to the 17th century. The breed came from the Terrier breeds which farmers used primarily to hunt rats in the farms and stables. This breed is a cross between the German Pinscher, Dacshund and the Italian Greyhound. It was brought to the United States in the 1920’s and became popular as a loving companion across the country in a short time. Although the Doberman Pinschers and Miniature Pinschers look the same in form, the latter is not considered as a “Miniature Doberman and came into existence at least 200 years prior to the Doberman. Mr. Karl Frederich Louis Dobermann bred the Doberman Pinscher in 1880. He had noted that he was searching to create a dog similar to the Miniature “Zwergpinscher” Pinscher but should be 15 times bigger.

In 1895, the Pinscher Schnauzer Club officially recognized Dobermann’s Pinscher and Deutscher Pinscher as separate breeds from the standard Schnauzer as well as the REH Pinscher. The original Min Pin was not a house pet but a working breed. They are being left at the farm with minimal human contact just like feral cats. This may have contributed to their unique independent trait that is innate to them.

History of Jack Russell Terrier breed

The Chuckchi people in Siberia had used the Husky to pull sleds and herd reindeer. The Siberian Husky was brought to Alaska in 1909 and to North America by fur traders in Malamute for arctic races because of their great speed. The Husky is a brilliant pack animal and gets along well with other dogs. They are popular for their endurance and their ability to adapt. Siberian Husky dogs are light-weight sled dogs with great stamina and have been used for sledding, carting and racing for centuries. Three breeds named, Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky all descended from the original “sled dog”. It was confirmed through DNA analysis that this is the oldest breed of dogs. Husky came from the nickname “Esky”, which was once applied to Eskimos and subsequently passed on to their dogs. With the aid of Siberian Huskies, the entire tribes of people were able to survive and push forth into terra incognita. Admiral Robert Peary of the United States Navy was assisted by this breed during his expeditions in search of the North Pole.

The dogs gained their popularity when they serve to bring medicine to people in 1925 when diphtheria epidemic hit Nome, Alaska. In 1930’s, the lst Siberians were exported when the Soviet government shut off the borders of Siberia to external today’s Siberian Huskies that are registered in North America are largely the descendants of the 1903’s Siberian imports. In 1933, the breed was starting to become prominent and Admiral Richard E. Byrd brought about 50 Siberian huskies with him on an expedition around the 16,000 mile coast of Antarctica. This breed also served in the US Army’s Arctic Search and Rescue Unite of the Air Transport Command during the World War II.

The rich and noble background of Siberian Husky is a great factor of it’s great attributes evident to each one present today.

History of American Bulldog breed

During 17th and 18th century in England, bulldogs were bred to catch bitches n farms, hold livestock and as guardians on farm properties. During this era, bulldogs became known in bloodsports and gambling; but in 1835, United Kingdom and Spain outlawed bull-baiting sports. Since then, bulldogs became common as a pet.

Bulldogs were brought to the United States by the working class immigrants. They were used then as farm guards, stock and catch dogs. After few years, these original bulldogs were becoming extinct. Mr. John D. Johnson, a war veteran, together with Alan Scott and other breeders, helped in resurrecting the original breed.

As a result of the breeding, they were able to meet their goal of creating the ideal working bulldog. They named this dog “American Pit Bulldog”, but was later renamed to “American Bulldog” to avoid confusion of another breed.

In January 1999, UKC recognized the American bulldogs as a registered breed.

History of Havanese and Bichon Frise breeds

The Havanese and Bichon Frise breeds descended from the same ancestor, Tenerife. These two breeds are regarded as “cousins” because of their physical similarities and same origin.

In the early 16th century, the Havanese dogs were travelled to Cuba from trade ships sailing from Tenerife Island. This breed was bred in Cuba continuously from 1900 to 2000. Being the preferred pet of the Cuban families, it now hold the title "National Dog of Cuba" and it is the only native breed coming from Cuba.

While in 1400’s, Bichon Frise dogs were said to have originated from Spain. After their long journey from Spain to Tenerife to France, Italy and Australia, this breed was introduced in United States in 1955. Bichons were then recognized by AKC in 1973.

Both Havanese and Bichon Frise became known as clown dogs in circuses.

History of Giant Schnauzer breed

In 1832, it was believed that the Giant Schnauzer breed came from cattle and pig farms in Bavarian highland of Germany. Giant Schnauzers’ original name was oberlanders.

In 1923, with the standard schnauzers as basis, a written breed standard, with the breed description and showing, was established for German type Giant Schnauzer.

A decrease in the number of this breed was observed after World War I. To reestablish the breed, Kennel and C. Clalaminus crossed this breed with other 3 breeds: black Great Dane, Standard Schnauzer, and Bouvier des Flandres. The goal was to dominate the black color, well-crested neck and correct head proportions.

The History of American Cocker Spaniel Breed

The American Cocker Spaniel breed was developed from the English Spaniels and was transported to the USA because of their good skills in hunting and watching. They are regarded as the smallest among all sporting dog breed groups.

The first ever Cocker Spaniel dog recorded in USA was “Captain” in 1878, a white and liver dog who was registered with the AKC. In, 1881, the dog breed owners and breeders, formed a club for this breed known as American Cocker Spaniel Club. The club is currently known as American Spaniel Club or ASC. The ASC is regarded as the oldest breed club in the USA.

Today, we can see the differences between the two Spaniel breeds:
- The American breed is lighter in weight and smaller in size than the English breed
- The American breed has a smaller muzzle
- The American breed has a softer coat

Since the differences between the two breeds are obvious, breeders in 1935, restricted breeding between the two types of Cocker Spaniels.

The History of Cairn Terrier Breed

The working dogs, Cairn Terriers originated in the Scottish Highlands. It is believed to be one of the oldest working Terrier breeds in Scotland, and even in the world. It was used before as a rat and rodent hunter among cairns, a man-made pile of stones used to mark farm/lot borders, memorials, and landmarks too.

In 1909, the name “Cairn Terrier” was just a compromise proposal after it was initially brought to dog shows in the UK. The original name of this breed was “Short-haired Skye terriers”. Since The Kennel Club did not accept the “Short-haired Skye terriers” name, thus the name "Cairn Terrier" was suggested.

Since Cairn Terrier training in the early days was focused in hunting, they now have the best instinct in catching and killing mice, squirrels, and rabbits.

The History of Rat Terrier Breed

The Rat Terrier dog was developed in Great Britain sometime early 19th century from the combination of Manchester, English White and Smooth Fox Terrier. Then in the later years of the same century, Rat Terriersthe were brought to USA from the British migrants.

As years went by, Ratties were mixed with Italian Greyhounds, Beagle, Miniature Pinschers, and Chihuahuas. The mix added useful qualities such as speed and genetic variability such as smaller size.

As their name goes and because of their speed, Rat Terriers are expert at killing rats, controlling vermin and hunting squirrels, and are commonly used in farms for such purposes. As a result, they were regarded as one of the most popular dog breeds from the 1920’s to 1940’s.

The History of Maltese Dog Breed

The Maltese dog is a small, white, long-haired, and Bichon Frise type. There have been debates on the history of this breed.

The Maltese is a very ancient dog. They are actually thought to be amongst the oldest of European breeds. Evidences of its existence in the Mediterranean area dates at least as far back as the First Century AD. Thus, some claim that this breed originated from the Isle of Malta in the Central Mediterranean Sea. This is where the dog got its name, Maltese.

Also, there are some people who claim that this breed came from Asia and eventually migrated to Europe through trade.

Among the two origins above, the claim that Maltese came from Malta is the one recognized by the AKC.
