The History of Maltese Dog Breed

The Maltese dog is a small, white, long-haired, and Bichon Frise type. There have been debates on the history of this breed.

The Maltese is a very ancient dog. They are actually thought to be amongst the oldest of European breeds. Evidences of its existence in the Mediterranean area dates at least as far back as the First Century AD. Thus, some claim that this breed originated from the Isle of Malta in the Central Mediterranean Sea. This is where the dog got its name, Maltese.

Also, there are some people who claim that this breed came from Asia and eventually migrated to Europe through trade.

Among the two origins above, the claim that Maltese came from Malta is the one recognized by the AKC.
