The History of Rat Terrier Breed

The Rat Terrier dog was developed in Great Britain sometime early 19th century from the combination of Manchester, English White and Smooth Fox Terrier. Then in the later years of the same century, Rat Terriersthe were brought to USA from the British migrants.

As years went by, Ratties were mixed with Italian Greyhounds, Beagle, Miniature Pinschers, and Chihuahuas. The mix added useful qualities such as speed and genetic variability such as smaller size.

As their name goes and because of their speed, Rat Terriers are expert at killing rats, controlling vermin and hunting squirrels, and are commonly used in farms for such purposes. As a result, they were regarded as one of the most popular dog breeds from the 1920’s to 1940’s.
