This breed is often mistaken as Jack Russell terrier but they tend to be less aggressive than the latter. They are also more masculine and their bones are finer. This breed is a good companion. They are lively, playful, well-mannered and good for kids. Rat Terriers are great for hunting too. They are also easy to train and are very loyal to their masters. Rat Terrier dogs love to swim and have no problems with water.
They are very sociable and as stated above, very trainable dogs. They are happy when people are around them.
