History of Giant Schnauzer breed

In 1832, it was believed that the Giant Schnauzer breed came from cattle and pig farms in Bavarian highland of Germany. Giant Schnauzers’ original name was oberlanders.

In 1923, with the standard schnauzers as basis, a written breed standard, with the breed description and showing, was established for German type Giant Schnauzer.

A decrease in the number of this breed was observed after World War I. To reestablish the breed, Kennel and C. Clalaminus crossed this breed with other 3 breeds: black Great Dane, Standard Schnauzer, and Bouvier des Flandres. The goal was to dominate the black color, well-crested neck and correct head proportions.

History of Bernese Mountain Dog breed

The Bernese Mountain Dogs, or BMD/Berner for short, were originally called “Dürrbachhundes”, a place where large dogs were usually present. The breed’s origin was believed to be from native Swiss breed from the Bernese Alps. They were used for driving livestock and guarding property farms and the families.

In early 1900’s, dog lovers conducted a show in Bernes Alps where large dogs were exhibited. Following that was the foundation of the breed club in Burgdorf in 1907. The club was called "Schweizerische Dürrbach-Klub”, which wrote the first standard, separating it as a Bernese Mountain Dog breed.

The History of American Cocker Spaniel Breed

The American Cocker Spaniel breed was developed from the English Spaniels and was transported to the USA because of their good skills in hunting and watching. They are regarded as the smallest among all sporting dog breed groups.

The first ever Cocker Spaniel dog recorded in USA was “Captain” in 1878, a white and liver dog who was registered with the AKC. In, 1881, the dog breed owners and breeders, formed a club for this breed known as American Cocker Spaniel Club. The club is currently known as American Spaniel Club or ASC. The ASC is regarded as the oldest breed club in the USA.

Today, we can see the differences between the two Spaniel breeds:
- The American breed is lighter in weight and smaller in size than the English breed
- The American breed has a smaller muzzle
- The American breed has a softer coat

Since the differences between the two breeds are obvious, breeders in 1935, restricted breeding between the two types of Cocker Spaniels.

The History of Cairn Terrier Breed

The working dogs, Cairn Terriers originated in the Scottish Highlands. It is believed to be one of the oldest working Terrier breeds in Scotland, and even in the world. It was used before as a rat and rodent hunter among cairns, a man-made pile of stones used to mark farm/lot borders, memorials, and landmarks too.

In 1909, the name “Cairn Terrier” was just a compromise proposal after it was initially brought to dog shows in the UK. The original name of this breed was “Short-haired Skye terriers”. Since The Kennel Club did not accept the “Short-haired Skye terriers” name, thus the name "Cairn Terrier" was suggested.

Since Cairn Terrier training in the early days was focused in hunting, they now have the best instinct in catching and killing mice, squirrels, and rabbits.

The History of Rat Terrier Breed

The Rat Terrier dog was developed in Great Britain sometime early 19^th century from the combination of Manchester, English White and Smooth Fox Terrier. Then in the later years of the same century, Rat Terriersthe were brought to USA from the British migrants.

As years went by, Ratties were mixed with Italian Greyhounds, Beagle, Miniature Pinschers, and Chihuahuas. The mix added useful qualities such as speed and genetic variability such as smaller size.

As their name goes and because of their speed, Rat Terriers are expert at killing rats, controlling vermin and hunting squirrels, and are commonly used in farms for such purposes. As a result, they were regarded as one of the most popular dog breeds from the 1920’s to 1940’s.

The History of Maltese Dog Breed

The Maltese dog is a small, white, long-haired, and Bichon Frise type. There have been debates on the history of this breed.

The Maltese is a very ancient dog. They are actually thought to be amongst the oldest of European breeds. Evidences of its existence in the Mediterranean area dates at least as far back as the First Century AD. Thus, some claim that this breed originated from the Isle of Malta in the Central Mediterranean Sea. This is where the dog got its name, Maltese.

Also, there are some people who claim that this breed came from Asia and eventually migrated to Europe through trade.Among the two origins above, the claim that Maltese came from Malta is the one recognized by the AKC.
